Mid century extra large anatomical East-German polychrome decorated classroom cut-away model of a Worker Bee. This is a large and impressive cut-away model on the original bakelite base.

It stands almost 20 inches tall. It's made of wood- and paper pulp also known as paper-mâché, wood, fabric, metal and paint. All the parts were hand made and hand painted.

These classroom models were very fragile and most did not survive.

The open side labelled with numerals, mounted on a bakelite display stand with handwritten on the label:

"No 3407 Apis Mellifica Arbeitsbiene".

Which are the Latin and German words for: western honey bee or European honey bee. The name Apis is Latin for bee, and mellifera (the scientific name for Millifica) is Latin for honey-bearing or honey carrying, referring to the species' production of honey.

The western honey bee was one of the first domesticated insects, and it is the primary species maintained by beekeepers to this day for both its honey production and pollination activities. There are indications that the species is rare, if not extinct in the wild in Europe and as of 2019, the western honey bee is listed as "Extinct" on the IUCN Red List. Western honey bees are an important model organism in scientific studies, particularly in the fields of social evolution, learning, and memory.
